This mid-century oil on board is after a painting by 16th century artist, Pieter Bruegel the Elder. The original oil-on-wood painting was completed in 1565 and titled “The Hunters in the Snow’. It’s housed in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna, Austria.
This painting is taken from a part of Bruegel’s original and isn’t a copy of the whole scene, it focusses on the hunters and their dogs walking through the snow. It’s signed by outsider artist Alan Simms, little information is available about him but the paintings by him that have come to the market are all quite experimental and often “after” historical paintings by famous artists. A few paintings by Simms have the same handcrafted folk art style frames, which suggests he was practiced in woodcrafts.
The frame measures 59cm x 59cm
Aperture measures 44.5cm x 44c
