This characterful stoneware bottle is an example of a traditional type of Japanese pottery, known as Bizen ware. Bizen ware originated from the area around Biden, a town near Okayama City and it’s roots can be traced back to the 5th century.
This Sake bottle has all the aesthetic characteristics of Bizen ware, with it’s rustic, reddish-brown appearance and the absence of a glaze. Another distinct feature of Bizen ware is its robustness, which is a result of a special firing process, this is why some very early pieces have survived, even with regular use. Its solid base and compact size make it great as a vase for a small posy of fresh or dried flowers.
No damage.
