Vintage Engraving by Thomas Derrick (1885-1954) Gifted to Fellow Artist Randolph Schwabe

£30.00
sold out

A small but incredibly atmospheric engraving by Thomas Derrick, an English artist with a particular talent for detailed illustrations and cartoons.
Written in pencil below the image it states the engraving was gifted directly from Derrick to fellow artist and illustrator, Randolph Schwabe.

The two talented artists were the same age and both studied at the Royal College of Art. We can’t be sure if their friendship began when they were students, or possibly when they were both working as official war artists during WW1. They both went on to teach art in various London colleges.

The engraving depicts a quaint cottage at dusk, with darkness slowly drawing in. Its windows are open wide, suggesting it’s a balmy summer’s eve. A single touch of colour is used to give the downstairs window an inviting warn glow. It’s likely this scene was very familiar to both artists and there is likely a personal and touching story behind it.
Frame measures 32cm x 28cm
Aperture measures 16cm x 13.5cm
