Patricia Florence Arnett was born in West Bromwich in 1923. After completing her foundation at The Memorial School of Art, West Bromwich, she trained at the Slade School of Art.
An undeniably talented student and illustrator, Arnett was awarded The Richardson Scholarship at the University of London.
In 1940, Arnett was commissioned to paint a series of murals in the West Bromwich central library depicting scenes from Chaucer's Canterbury Tales. She continued to paint murals for various establishments throughout the 1950s, by which time she was also working as a theatre designer for the Royal Shakespeare Company. She also consistently exhibited with the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists throughout most of her life.
In 1952, she married Harold Harris (1912-1982), a fellow student at art school. This painting was likely completed or at least initially sketched, whilst the couple were on their honeymoon in Italy. Though the pair travelled extensively in the 1950s and 1960s and Arnett would paint and sketch ferociously in every destination they explored.
The painting is not clearly signed but came directly from the artist’s estate with several other examples of her work.
