Plush chenille throws like this one were commonly used in the Victorian period as table covers. Varnished dark wood furniture was popular at the time and the thick pile of these throws protected the surface of the wood from sunlight and wear. They were also used as bed toppers and furniture throws to add extra warmth and protect more delicate fabrics.
The throw has been carefully hand-washed and air dried. One edge of the throw is damaged, possibly from where it had been pinned up as a wall hanging. The damaged area has been turned over and hand-sewn into place, it’s not greatly noticeable as it just means the border is a little shorter on one end. Beside this damage the throw is generally in good condition for its age with no other significant damage like moth holes or burns etc.
Measures 260cm x 145cm
