Small 17th Century Oil Painting on Panel
c.1650 oil painting on a small but thick wood panel. The scene depicts a meeting between two military figures, dressed in contrasting attire. They appear to each be holding up a glass as though in celebration of an agreement. On the back is a fragment of material with a paper label, the first half of the label is damaged and unreadable but the second half reads ‘Regalia’.
Signed with the initials R.E.L. There is a record for a collection of corresponding paintings by the same artist in the possession of an antiques shop on the south coast (not including this one). They would have likely all been produced around the same time as a series of satirical paintings of similar contemporary political and societal subjects. Their unusual tile like shape might suggest they were originally set into a wall panel or something similar.
The frame is later, late 18th to 19th century. The handmade nails are also of this period. The frame has a lot of wear and signs of aging but is structurally solid and is holding the painting firmly.
There is some paint loss on the left edge. The painted panel measures 14cm x 10cm. Frame measures 20cm x 16cm.
