A rare example of ‘Shelf Pottery’, handmade in Shelf near Halifax, West Yorkshire . Not only is the colour extremely unusual for Shelf Pottery, but also the form. The majority of their designs are highly decorative and/or sculptural, making this very practical and classically shaped bowl, somewhat of an oddity!
The exterior has been simply decorated using a traditional technique more typically found on 19th century pottery. The mottled effect is made by dabbing coloured slip onto a plain background.
Originally started by an art teacher as a hobby in the 1970s, Shelf Pottery quickly expanded into a substantial pottery studio.
The bowl has no damage, it doesn’t look to have ever been used.
Diameter 25.5cm
Height 10cm
