Original hand-drawn and coloured architectural drawings for a proposed building in Chesterfield, Derbyshire. The architect is William Martin Ashmore, a highly regarded award winning architect from Chesterfield who was active in the late 19th- early 20th century.
As well as being a very talented architect, the recent release of personal documents belonging to the Ashmore family has revealed he was a close friend of Edward Carpenter, socialist, poet and early gay rights activist.
We have a number of his original architectural drawings available, all of which are designs for buildings in Chesterfield.
This particular drawing is for a “Proposed House at Old Brampton” and the client is a J.F. Woodhead Esq. The house is quite large with five bedrooms and even a large bathroom and a wrap around balcony. Balconies are a common feature in Ashmore’s design and they were a popular feature in Edwardian architecture with people believing that fresh air could cure a variety of problems.
The drawings are on fine coated linen which has some translucency for ease of copying. If the drawing was backed and mounted, it would accentuate the details much greater.
Measures 55.5cm x 37cm.
