Oil Portrait of Moustached Gentleman & Other by Iris Hardcastle (1919-2013)
An original oil painting on paper by Yorkshire artist, Iris Hardcastle. Not a great deal of information is available about Hardcastle but we do know she was born in West Yorkshire and exhibited in Bradford and other Yorkshire galleries. She was predominantly painting in the 1940s and 1950s.
The painting is filled almost entirely by an interesting duo portrait. In the foreground is a man with a thick black moustache wearing a red necktie and a weathered bowler hat accessorised with a stalk of straw in the brim. The gentleman’s attire suggests he’s a working man and likely works on the land. The elongated figure in the background is depicted in much more muted colours, his skin and clothing are almost the same tone. His clothing appears to be layered like reptilian scales or armoured plates.
The painting has been sandwiched between two boards so it’s not possible to see the back without ripping the mount. Someone has however, wrote on the mount details for the painting, possibly based on what they saw on the back of the paper before it was hidden.
The painting has been framed in a vintage solid pine frame, it has a muted Art Deco style to it with the stepped detail. The frame has some small scuffs and scratches.
Frame measures 75cm x 64cm
Aperture measures 55cm x 37cm
