Miniature Art Figure ‘Jumblies’ by Barbara Watkinson After Edward Lear Nonsense Songs

£42.00

Hand-crafted miniature art sculpture by Harrogate-based artist Barbara Allen Watkinson (nee Ingham) 1911-2000.

Watkinson was a talented and multi-skilled artist who specialised in small and intricate art forms including portrait miniatures, enamelware and small sculptural figures. She was a member of the Royal Society of Miniatures and took part in several exhibitions between the 1960s and 1980s.

This particular piece is titled ‘Jumblies’ and is After the front cover of Edward Lear’s ‘Nonsense Songs’, 1941. The Jumblies was a poem in the book and was about a group of fantastical creatures with green heads and blue hands who sail the ocean in a sieve whilst encountering various adventures.

Barbara would meticulously list all materials used in her figures, often in tiny writing on the back of one of her business cards! These lists are still present with some of the figures we have of hers and this is undoubtedly the most detailed list. We believe this to be one of Watkinson’s earlier works, pre 1970s. The figure comes with an original illustration by Watkinson.

Base measures 12cm x 9cm. Raft diameter 7cm.
