Soumak Kilims are an unusual type of handwoven rug. We believe this particular design originates from a town in Azerbaijan, formerly a part of Persia.
What makes these rugs comparatively rare, is the technique with which they’re made. The wefts strands are threaded through some warp strands and then looped back, serving as a decorative role rather than the structural role of knotted carpets. The threads are typically embroidered and not cut off at the back.
This technique results in a thin and flexible rug with no pile, but a well defined and intricate pattern. They’re also known for being very strong and durable.
This particular rug from the mid 20th century is woven in wool and has a traditional earthy terracotta red base colour with blue/black borders and light blue detail.
Light wear for age. There is some variation of colour depth, likely caused by sunlight hitting parts of the rug not covered with furniture.
Measures 196cm x 148cm.
Delivery/postage available.
