Large Impressionist Oil Painting by 20th Century Artist Simon Goldberg (1916-2002)
Born Solomon Goldberg in London, 1916, he worked as Sydney Goldberg until around 1950, and then Simon Goldberg for the remainder of his life. Goldberg trained at St Martin’s College of Art, then the Royal College of Art, 1937–40. His teachers included John Nash, Gilbert Spencer and Edward Bawden.
Goldberg went straight from art college to serve in the Royal Artillery, 1940–1944 and the Royal Army Service Corps, 1944–1946. After the war he returned to art and taught at Hull Regional College of Arts and Crafts from 1946-1983. Goldberg was accomplished in many different forms of media, but worked mostly in lithography and oil, producing townscapes and some landscapes.
Though the subject of the painting is a common sight- a row of suburban houses, Goldberg has created a vivid impressionist style painting with lots of movement, energy and vivid colours. Goldberg was known for painting fervently every day. Even in his later years when he wasn’t very mobile, he would repeatedly paint views from the studio window in his home. The resulting paintings might all be very similar, but each one is painted from a slightly different perspective or different time of year or even just a different time of day.
The oil painting is on canvas and has been professionally framed in a Victorian style black relief frame. The canvas is a little stretched, likely from pressure applied when it was being painted. It’s not greatly noticeable.
Frame measures 82cm x 67cm.
Aperture measures 70cm x 54.5cm.
Delivery available.
