Antique Japanese Stoneware Tabimakura Vase

£35.00

These simple cylindrical shaped vessels are known as ‘Tabimakura’ vases or ‘pillow vase’. They were traditionally used by travellers, not only as storage, but also for somewhere to rest their head. Whilst shaping the soft clay, the potter would gently squeeze the middle of the vase to create a smooth dip, with the intention of increasing comfort when it was placed under the neck or head.

This particular vase was made around the late 19th century-early 20th century. It has an earthy colour palette and rustic unglazed finish, typical of Japanese Bizen ware. The maker has signed the base.
