This oil portrait painting is small but slightly larger than a typical portrait miniature. A label on the back written by the sitter’s family, tells us that the lady is Maria Birtwhistle from West Yorkshire. Born in 1812, she died in 1872 and was buried in a share grave with her sister Eliza, and Eliza’s family. This suggests she possibly did not marry, though we can find no record of where she lived for most of her life. The painting captures Maria in her late 20s to early.
The painting is on a metal plate and mounted in a gilt frame. We have put a new board behind the painting to hold it more securely within the frame. The frame has some damage but is holding firm. The painting also has some light wear and age spots/marks.
Frame measures 27cm x 23cm.
Aperture measures 17.5cm x 13.5cm.
