Early 20th Century Ink & Watercolour Painting ‘The Dancing Bear’ Inn
c.1920s-1930s original pen and watercolour of an 18th century street scene featuring the edge of what looks to be a coaching inn called ‘The Dancing Bear’. It is likely a fictional scene or only loosely based on a real street. The drawing style and bright colours suggest it was intended as a book illustration. The figures facing forward have interesting feminine, doll-like faces, very similar to the “crinoline ladies” popularly used in art and needlework at the time.
The artist has signed it E. Claytor and their Birmingham address is written on the back of the board. Unfortunately no further information is readily available about the artist.
The oak frame measures 38.5cm x 33.5cm
Aperture measures 25cm x 17.5cm
