Early Victorian Watercolour Portrait of Lady in Brown Dress & Shawl
An original c.1830s portrait of a young lady. She’s somewhat modestly dressed in a brown wool dress but her hair is fashionably parted and curled and she wears a sprig of flowers and ferns in her bonnet. The artist has used blue to highlight the sitter’s very fair skin tone, suggesting that this lady was of a class that enabled her to keep out of the sun and retain her porcelain-like complexion.
The colours are unusually strong for a watercolour of this age, a testament to the portrait being looked after and kept away from direct sunlight.
The frame is possibly later but of a nice quality and it’s pared back finish is complimentary to the portrait.
Frame measures 49cm x 41.5cm.
