This early 20th century Kilim is made from two handwoven lengths joined down the middle. Older looms were often quite narrow and so Kilims were limited to a certain width, unless sewn together. The Kilim panels are hand-dyed using traditional methods and natural products, which has resulted in some interesting colour variation. The stripes are a blend of red, black, brown and subtle indigo.
The Kilim is lightweight and soft, so would have likely not been used as a rug but more as a bed roll, or blanket. It would be great as a throw on a chair or sofa.
There’s light age related wear, some pulls and a little bit of sun fading on one side, but no significant damage. It’s in very good condition for its age.
Measures 170cm x 120cm.
