Shop Antique Traditional Tekke Rug

Antique Traditional Tekke Rug

£95.00
sold out

c.1900. The rug is in good useable condition. It has even wear to the pile but no holes or moth damage.

The colour could be described as faded Vermillion, it would have once been closer to a red but has faded to an attractive soft terracotta brown/orange. The other colours are cream, light orange and two different shades of dark blue.

Measures 202cm x 128cm

It has a geometric pattern with a repeated sequence of 36 motifs known as ‘guls’ which means flower.

Tekke rugs were made by the Tekke tribe, who were by tradition a nomadic pastoral people, mostly located in what is now part of Turkemenistan. They lived in tent villages and raised sheep, goats, horses, camels and cattle. With the completion of the Central Asian Railway in 1888, the Tekke Rugs were the first Turkoman Rugs to be exported in large numbers.

Tekke rugs have a distinctive characteristically flat weave. They are made with a hand-knotted wool pile formed by asymetrical knots tied onto ivory coloured wool warps.

Traditionally the rugs (and other tribal weavings) were made for the weavers own nomadic use and they were also seen as assets to be sold-on in times of need.

Delivery within the UK will be approx £23.50. Please ask for a quote for International shipping,
