Antique Persian Mahal Floral Motif Rug

£80.00

Original c1900-1920 hand-woven rug from the region around the city of Arak, or Sultanabad as it was known prior to 1930.

The rug has a traditional dark red base colour with a dark blue border and a repeated fish-like pattern, said to represent the decorative fish in the ponds at the palace. In the centre are large floral motifs in orange and pink. Mahal rugs have a characteristic low but dense pile. Due to age and wear, the pile of the rug has worn significantly giving it an authentic aged appearance and colour distribution. Despite its wear, it’s very firm with many years of life left- a testament to its quality.

Measures L196cm x W160cm- the width varies somewhat as it’s now a perfect rectangle.

*would be best used with anti-slip backing or similar
