An atmospheric and somewhat haunting depiction of The Ypres Cloth Hall in Belgium following following a series of attacks during WW1. The painting was completed and dated 1921, but it’s unclear if the painting is capturing the scene exactly as it was in 1921 or it’s an interpretation of the Cloth Hall immediately after it was shelled, pre 1918. Substantial reconstruction work began in 1921, so it was likely a poignant time to paint the ruins before the transformation took shape.
The painting has under layers of red, pink and orange. When sunlight hits the painting from the back, it gives the effect of the ruins smouldering.
Signed and dated in the bottom corner- though it’s rather tricky to read clearly, the sister painting of this has a much clearer signature and date (also listed).
A small number of tiny chips to the paint but otherwise in good condition.
