Antique Howard Style Country House Armchair Zoffany ‘Portcullis’ Linen Cover

£280.00
sold out

A very traditional “country house” armchair with a sprung seat and feather filled cushions. It’s in the very convincing form of a Victorian Howard armchair but likely made around the 1980s. It’s of a high quality but unfortunately without an obvious maker’s mark.

The armchair is upholstered in French ticking with a removable linen cover. The custom made cover is made by Zoffany in the ‘Portcullis’ pattern, this striking pattern was designed especially for The Palace of Westminster.

The removable cover has an upholsterer’s label, a very Art Deco revival style logo of the letters ‘Ga’. Along with the cover, there are also separate arm covers which have been designed to perfectly match up with the pattern- a further sign of its high quality. (Only one arm cover is shown in the photographs as the other was still drying after been hand-washed.)

The cover has only been spot cleaned and steamed as it’s not imminently in need of washing. A couple of marks are concealed under the seat cushion. Starch sprayed on the back of the skirt has yellowed, which has faintly shown through in spots in a couple of areas/ very hard to notice. Washing would need be to with cold water and a gentle detergent, followed by efficient drying to avoid colour run.

The seat cushion has some colour fading to the front edge but the fabric is otherwise without significant damage. The feather filled cushion padding is very plump and retains its shape well.

Depth from back to front 85cm
Height of back 91cm
Full width across front 88cm
Height of seat approx 45cm
Width of seat between arms 55cm
Seat depth 58cm
