19th century elongated fan shaped brooch of Japanese shakudo work. The base metal is made from oxidised copper alloy with detailed added in gold and silver.
The technique of shakudo and shibuichi was originally developed by samurai sword-makers to decorate sword-mounts and guards. Jewellery and other curiosities decorated with shakudo and shibuichi work became increasingly popular in the West in the mid to late 19th century.
Only light surface wear. Silver pin back is in excellent working order.
