Antique 19th century Belouch/Baluch Nomadic Tribal Rug
Original c.1890 rug woven by the Belouch (or Baluch) people of Eastern Iran (then Persia).
It’s characteristically lightweight and flexible. The Belouch people are a nomadic ethnic group and so the rugs need to be suitable for layering on the tent floor and easy to roll up and transport.
The pattern is constructed of three diamonds with repeated frames of latch hooks/bird heads. The colours are very typical for antique Belouch rugs with deep shades of aubergine, red and browns with some lifts of blue and ivory.
These rugs traditionally have a very flat pile and wear over the years has worn it down further. Most of the kilim ends are complete but there looks to have been a little loss. Despite the heavy wear, there are no holes and the edges are in fair condition for their age.
Length 221cm (not including fringe)
Width 106cm
